Artist Statement
Fran Cresswell is a painter and printmaker preoccupied with portraiture. Her work is closely observed, seeking to hold both likeness and a deeper sense of presence. Informed by a background in printmaking, her practice is grounded in drawing, alongside an exploration of mark-making — negotiating where to hold control and where to let go.
Her portraits are rooted in her relationships with those she paints. Approaching portraiture as an exchange between artist and sitter, she creates space for subjects to be encountered more fully, resisting performance and allowing them to exist on their own terms.
Her work is shaped by an interest in what it means to see and to feel seen, and begins to interrogate the dynamics of the gaze. Influenced by her experience of chronic illness, she explores how being truly seen can hold a quiet transformative power.
